Do Bike Pumps Fit All Bikes?
No, as there are two common types of valves that are standard for bike tires. These are the Schrader and Presta valves. You will need to get a pump that works with the particular valve on your bike. There are universal pumps available that work on both.
What Are The Main Types Of Bike Valves?
There are three main types of bike valves you will more than likely have on your bike tires. These are as follows with the first two valves that have been most commonly found on modern bikes.
- Schrader Valves.
- Presta Valves.
- Dunlop or Woods Valves.
Where To Attach A Pump To Your Bike?
There are not many places on a bike to attach a pump but there are three popular places that are safe to attach a pump. These are as follows.
- The downtube (This is from the handlebars down to the pedals).
- The seat tube (This is from the saddle down to the pedals).
- The crossbar (This is from the handlebars to the saddle).
How To Attach A Bike Pump To Your Bike?
There are a number of ways to attach a pump to your bike. These are as follows.
- Mounting Clip.
- Pump Strap.
- Zip Ties.
Mount clips are a simple design that is easy to install, and the pump fits perfectly. These tend to be more secure but it does require you to have pre-drilled holes in your bike frame to install the bike pump mount. Otherwise, you will have to drill the holes yourself. Some of these do not come with bolts so you may need to buy bolts separately.
Pump straps are a popular method because they are affordable as their price range is and around $8, plus they are simple, lightweight, very portable, and reusable.
All you have to do is fasten the pump to your bike with the straps. There is no assembly are tools required plus it can be used to fasten flashlights, water bottles, and more.
Zip ties are a cheap and simple option. They cost around the same as the pump straps and do not look as good as the pump straps. To use the zip tires you have to do is fasten the pump to your bike with the zip ties.
Which One I Personally Prefer?
Personally, I prefer the pump strap option with the reason been that it is a simple option that looks better than the zip ties.
The problem I have with the mounting clip is that you will need to have pre-drilled holes to attach the pump mount. And I do not want to drill holes into my bike frame unnecessarily especially when there is another option.
With zip ties, they just look ugly but they are as effective as the other two options.
How Much Does A Bike Pump Cost?
You can expect to pay from $15 to $35 for a good portable bike pump. You do need to make sure that it is lightweight and is reasonably small so that it will be easy to attach to the bike and that the weight will not have an impact on your ride.
Also, you need to make sure it is a good quality pump if the pump is too cheap it may not be good enough to pump your tires.
What Pressure Should My Bike Tyres Be?
It is important to have your tire pressure set properly as it improves your ride, and helps to avoid flats. Generally, mountain tires should be between 25 to 35 psi. While road tires typically need around 80 to 130 psi. And hybrid tires are between 40 to 70 psi.
What Happens If You Put Too Much Air In Your Bike Tires?
Simply if the tire pressure is high you will be able to go faster but will feel vibrations on any sort of bumpy terrain which can make the ride uncomfortable. The higher pressure tire is more suited for biking on a road.
Whereas if mountain biking on a trail that is a bumpy terrain with loose rocks and obstacles this would mean that the tires need to be at a lower pressure which will help with absorbing the shock s absorption and give you more traction cause there is more tire that is in contact with the ground.
Finally, you can attach a bike pump to your bike but there are a number of considerations. There are a number of places where to place the pump which can be either the downtube tube, seat and crossbar. Personally, I prefer the pump strap option as it is the easiest way to attach a bike pump.
